Residency Questions: Dinner and Interview

Keeping my word like I stated on @TheNaijaDoc, I am listing the questions that I used for all my interviews. You do not have to ask EVERY SINGLE QUESTION; keep in mind that other students can ask some of these questions as well. I hope these help you as much as they helped me.

Residency Dinner Questions:

  1. If you had to choose again, would you pick this program?

  2. What do you guys do together as friends outside of the hospital?

  3. Do you feel that you get enough time to handle things in your personal life (cook, clean, rest, see friends and family, take care of your pet, etc)?

  4. What is the biggest thing you would change about your program?

  5. Do you feel like you actually get to complete your work by the end of the day or do things frequently drag over into the next day?

  6. Do you have a good relationship with your fellow colleagues? Is there any rivalry amongst the classes?

  7. Do you feel you get bogged down in “scut work” (chasing labs, social work calls, making appointments)?

  8. How do you enjoy the city?

  9. Is there a checks and balances as an intern to ensure you’re doing what’s best for the patient?

  10. Do you feel you had adequate time to study for your boards? If not, why?

  11. Are resident suggestions taken seriously?

Residency Interview Questions:

  1. What about (insert school name) still has you practicing here?

  2. What do you think makes (insert school name) stand out compared to programs with smaller/larger intern classes?

  3. How do you think (insert school name) allows its residents to obtain work/life balance?

  4. Is there a mentoring program that allows residents to be paired up with residents and faculty members throughout their residency?

  5. How often are residents evaluated, and what is the structure of the evaluation (forms, face-to-face, etc)?

  6. If you could change one thing about (insert school name), what would it be?

  7. What changes, if any, do you anticipate with (insert school name) ‘s (insert specialty) program during the next 3-5 years?

  8. Do you provide your students with designated study time? How so?

  9. What percentage of students pass their USMLE 3 on the first attempt (check to see if this is stated online first)?

  10. How much of a role do interns/residents take in educating medical students?

  11. How soon can interns become involved with research? How do they become familiar with ongoing projects?

  12. How open is (insert school name) to changes/suggestions from interns/residents?
